The nursing component of the Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM) has two main steps in the methodology to achieve the final case-mix group (CMG), but within those steps is a complex and nuanced process that can confuse nurse assessment coordinators (NACs). The first step calculates the resident’s nursing function score using section GG items. The second step classifies the resident into one of the six clinical categories using a conditions, diagnoses, treatments, and other clinical items. Because the nursing component is calculated from multiple sections of the MDS, it is important for the NAC and the interdisciplinary team (IDT) members completing the MDS to recognize all items that could potential affect the PDPM case-mix groups.
This 60-minute webinar will walk through the complex path of the first three Nursing component clinical categories and uncover the key elements needed to fully understand the methodology of Extensive Services, Special Care Low, and Special Care High.
After participating in this session, learners will be able to:
- Understand the nursing functional score calculation using section GG items
- Identify the MDS items used to qualify for the Extensive Services, Special Care High, and Special Care Low clinical categories
- Apply the nursing component methodology to project a final case-mix group (CMG) based on clinical indicators
