On-Demand Webinar: Enhanced Barrier Precautions

Recorded On: 04/14/2025

Long-term care (LTC) staff provide high-contact resident care and therefore are frequently exposed to multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). During this 60-minute webinar, Joan Hebden, MS, RN, CIC, FAPIC, FSHEA, president of IPC Consulting Group and Deb Patterson Burdsall, PhD, RN-BC, CIC, LTC-CIP, FAPIC, a leading infection preventionist with the Hektoen Institute of Medicine and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Grantee, will discuss Enhanced Barrier Precautions (EBPs), which are an infection control intervention implemented to reduce the transmission of MDROs, specifically for LTC residents with wounds requiring dressings or indwelling medical devices (i.e. residents at increased risk of MDRO acquisition) and/or residents with an epidemiologically important MDRO. The speakers will cover the scientific background for mandated adoption of EBPs, key terms, high-contact care activities that dictate the use of EBPs, how to distinguish EBPs from Standard and Contact Precautions, common challenges when implementing EBPs, and how to determine when EBPs are appropriate using case scenarios.

After participating in this session, learners will be able to:

  • Discuss the scientific background for mandated adoption of EBP in LTC facilities
  • Define the key terms that support EBP
  • Define high-contact care activities that dictate the use of EBP
  • Distinguish EBP from Standard and Contact Precautions
  • Identify common challenges encountered when implementing EBP
  • Using case scenarios, determine when EBP are appropriate

1.0 contact hour will be awarded for this continuing nursing education activity. Learners must view at least 80% of the entire video and complete the associated evaluation to receive the contact hours. No partial credit will be awarded.
